Radioactive Fungi

Radioactive Fungi

There’s a type of fungi found in Chernobyl that’s able to use radiation as a source of energy! A bit like how plants create their own food by utilising sunlight during photosynthesis, the fungi named Cladosporium sphaerospermum utilises radiation through a process called radiosynthesis 🍄☢️

Scientists are looking into the possibility of using this ‘radiation eating fungus’ to clean up radioactive waste, as well as potentially using it in future space exploration.
