What do strawberries, dandelions, and cannabis all have in common? 🍓🌼🪴
We tend to think of the red fleshy part of a strawberry as being fruit, but because it’s not formed from the flowers ovary it’s botanically known as an accessory fruit. The true fruits are what lay on the surface – the pips!
The pips of strawberries (which are often mistaken for seeds) are called achenes, they’re tiny, dry fruits that are formed from the flowers ovaries, each containing just a single seed. Dandelions and cannabis also produce achenes, so in a way they all bear the same form of fruit!
